Blade Runner é um filme de ficção científica neo-noir americano de 1982 dirigido por Ridley Scott e estrelado por Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young e Edward James Olmos. O roteiro, escrito por Hampton Fancher e David Peoples, é vagamente baseado no romance Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, de Philip K. Dick.

Em novembro de 2019 na cidade de Los Angeles, o ex-policial Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) é detido pelo oficial Gaff (Edward James Olmos) que o leva até seu antigo supervisor, Bryant (M. Emmet Walsh). Deckard, cujo trabalho como "Blade Runner" foi de rastrear seres de bioengenharia, conhecidos como replicantes e "aposentá-los" (um eufemismo para matá-los). É informado que quatro replicantes vieram à Terra ilegalmente. Todos foram criados pela Corporação Tyrell e são de um modelo chamado Nexus-6, eles possuem uma vida útil de apenas quatro anos e podem ter vindo à Terra para tentar prolongar suas vidas.

Deckard assiste a uma gravação de vídeo de um Blade Runner chamado Holden administrando o teste "Voight-Kampff", destinado a distinguir replicantes dos seres humanos, com base em suas respostas emocionais às perguntas. Enquanto aplicava o teste, Leon (Brion James) atira em Holden após uma pergunta sobre sua mãe. Bryant quer que Deckard "aposente" Leon e os outros três replicantes: Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), Zhora (Joanna Cassidy), e Pris (Daryl Hannah). Deckard inicialmente recusa, mas depois que Bryant o ameça, ele relutantemente concorda.

Deckard começa sua investigação na Tyrell Corporation para assegurar que o teste funciona em modelos Nexus-6. Enquanto estava lá, ele descobre que o Dr. Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel) tem uma assistente, Rachael (Sean Young), que é uma replicante experimental que acredita ser um ser humano. Foram dadas falsas memórias para Rachael no intuito de fornecer uma "almofada emocional". Como resultado, um teste mais extenso é necessário para determinar se ela é de fato uma replicante.

Os replicantes fugitivos iniciam sua busca por Tyrell para forçá-lo a prolongar suas vidas. Roy e Leon investigam um laboratório de fabricação de olhos para replicantes e descobrem sobre o J.F. Sebastian (William Sanderson), um talentoso designer genético que trabalha em estreita colaboração com a Tyrell Corporation. Rachael visita Deckard em seu apartamento para provar sua humanidade, mostrando-lhe uma foto de família, mas depois que Deckard revela que suas memórias são implantes da sobrinha de Tyrell, ela sai de seu apartamento em lágrimas. Enquanto isso, Pris localiza Sebastian e o manipula para ganhar a sua confiança.

Enquanto vasculhava o quarto de hotel de Leon, Deckard encontra uma foto de Zhora e uma escama de cobra sintética, que o leva a um clube de strip, onde Zhora trabalha. Deckard mata Zhora e pouco tempo depois é informado por Bryant que ele também precisa aposentar Rachael, que desapareceu da Tyrell Corporation. Depois que Deckard vê Rachael entre uma multidão, ele é atacado por Leon, mas Rachael o salva matando Leon, usando a pistola que Deckard deixou cair durante a briga com o replicante. Os dois retornam até o apartamento de Deckard e, após uma discussão íntima, ele promete não caçá-la; quando ela tenta sair do apartamento, ele a segura, obrigando-a a beijá-lo.

Chegando no apartamento de Sebastian, Roy diz a Pris que os outros estão mortos. Enquanto isso, Sebastian revela que devido a sua "Síndrome de Matusalém" , um envelhecimento prematuro das suas células, sua vida também será interrompida. Sebastian é convencido por Roy a leva-lo até a presença de Tyrell, onde Roy exige mais vida de seu criador. Tyrell diz-lhe que é impossível. Roy confessa que ele tem feito "coisas questionáveis", que Tyrell nega, louvando a concepção e realizações alcançadas por Roy em sua vida a curto prazo. Roy beija Tyrell, então o mata. Em seguida, ao ser mostrado descendo no elevador sozinho, fica implícito que Roy também matou Sebastian.

Ao entrar no apartamento de Sebastian, Deckard é emboscado por Pris, mas ele consegue matá-la, e Roy retorna pouco depois. Quando Roy se dá conta que o momento de sua morte chegou, ele persegue Deckard através do edifício, terminando em cima do telhado. Deckard tenta saltar em um telhado ao lado, mas erra e fica pendurado entre os edifícios. Roy faz o salto com facilidade, e quando Deckard escorrega e está prestes a cair, Roy o segura pela mão e o puxa de volta, salvando-o. Roy, que começa a morrer neste momento, faz um monólogo sobre como suas memórias "serão perdidas como lágrimas na chuva"; Roy morre na frente de Deckard, que assiste tudo em silêncio. Gaff chega e grita para Deckard, "É muito ruim que ela não vá viver, mas afinal, quem vai?". Deckard retorna ao seu apartamento e encontra a porta entreaberta, mas Rachael está segura, dormindo em sua cama. Quando eles saem, Deckard percebe um pequeno origami de unicórnio feito em papel alumínio no chão, um cartão de visita familiar que traz de volta a ele as palavras finais de Gaff. Deckard e Rachael saem rapidamente do bloco de apartamentos.

A trilha sonora de Blade Runner composta por Vangelis é uma combinação melódica sombria de composição clássica e sintetizadores futuristas que espelha o filme noir retro-futurístico imaginado por Ridley Scott. Vangelis, que recentemente havia ganhado um Óscar de melhor trilha sonora por Carruagens de Fogo, compôs e executou a música em seus sintetizadores. Ele também fez uso de vários timbres e os vocais do colaborador Demis Roussos. Outro som memorável é o assombroso solo de saxofone de "Love Theme" realizado pelo saxofonista britânico Dick Morrissey, que se apresentou em muitos dos álbuns de Vangelis. Ridley Scott também usou "Memories of Green" do álbum See You Later de Vangelis, uma versão orquestral de que Scott posteriormente usaria em seu filme Perigo na Noite.

Junto com as composições de Vangelis e as texturas do ambiente, a paisagem sonora do filme também apresenta uma faixa do conjunto japonês Nipponia – "Ogi No Mato" ou "The Folding Fan as a Target" da Nonesuch Records lançada em vocal tradicional e também como música instrumental – e uma faixa pela harpista Gail Laughton de "Harps of the Ancient Temples" pela Laurel Records.

Apesar de ser bem recebido pelos fãs e aclamado pela crítica e nomeado em 1983 por um BAFTA e Globo de Ouro como melhor partitura original, juntamente com a promessa de um álbum da trilha sonora pela Polydor Records nos créditos finais do filme, o lançamento da gravação da trilha sonora oficial foi atrasado em mais de uma década. Existem duas versões oficiais da música de Blade Runner. À luz da falta de um lançamento de um álbum, a New American Orchestra gravou uma adaptação orquestral em 1982 que tinha poucas semelhanças com a trilha original. Algumas das faixas do filme, em 1989, apareceram na compilação Vangelis: Themes, mas não até o lançamento de 1992 da versão Director's Cut que possuíra uma quantidade substancial da trilha sonora do filme lançada comercialmente.

Tais atrasos e pobres reproduções levaram à produção de muitas gravações bootleg ao longo dos anos. Uma fita deste estilo emergiu em 1982 em convenções de ficção científica e tornou-se popular dado o atraso da liberação oficial das gravações originais, e em 1993 a "Off World Music, Ltd" criou um CD bootleg que provou-se mais detalhado do que o CD oficial de Vangelis em 1994. Um conjunto com três CDs de Blade Runner relacionados com as músicas de Vangelis foi lançado em 2007. Intitulado Blade Runner Trilogy, o primeiro disco contém as mesmas faixas do lançamento oficial de 1994, o segundo apresenta a música inédita do filme e o terceiro disco são todas a músicas (até então) recentemente compostas por Vangelis, inspirada por, e no espírito do filme.

Duke Ellington

O compositor e bandleader Ellington conduziu um das orquestras mais notáveis e autodefinidas do jazz durante 50 anos. Não só manteve uma visão musical consistente onde pode desenvolver o seu trabalho como um compositor, mas se sustentou durante décadas com um núcleo leal de solistas que construiram suas próprias marcas na história do jazz.

Dentro do contexto de direção de uma banda, Ellington se tornou figura única no mundo do jazz ao produzir um songbook da canção popular americana comparável em amplitude e profundidade ao que foi gerado por Gershwin, Rodgers, Berlim e Arlen.

Canções como "Mood Indigo", "Solitude", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" e muitos outros foram executados amplamente e se tornaram standards americanos.

Ellington nasceu em 29 de abril de 1899, e cresceu em um ambiente de classe-média em Washington, D.C. Ele começou a tocar piano com sete anos nos estilos de ragtime e stride. Ele veio para New York com os Washingtonians, e logo assumiu liderança quando Snowden partiu.

Ellington ficou com um grupo de instrumentistas que permaneceriam com ele durante anos e o seguiriam até o topo: Sonny Greer, Otto Hardwick, Arthur Whetsol e Fred Guy. Antes do final dos anos vinte, entraram para o grupo: Harry Carney, Johnny Hodges e Cootie Williams, cada um permanecendo com Ellington até nos anos sessenta.

Os anos de formação da banda de Ellington cobrem de 1924 até 1935. Na seção rítmica a tuba e o banjo foram substituídos pelo baixo e violão e Lawrence Brown trouxe um som único para o trombone. O período também rendeu uma combinação de sucessos para Ellington, como "Rockin'In Rhythm", "Black And Tan Fantasy", "Creole Love Call, que permaneceriam no seu repertório até o fim.

O período de maturidade começa em meados dos anos trinta e atinge o auge no período de 1940-45. As presenças de Jimmy Blanton no baixo e de Ben Webster no sax-alto foram fundamentais na construção de "Ko Ko", "Concerto For Cootie", "Jack The Bear", "Cotton Tail", "Harlem Airshaft" e "Take The A Train", todas gravadas pela RCA.

Este período de intensa criatividade estende até sua composição mais ambiciosa de Ellington, o épico "Black, Brown And Beige", concebido em 1943. Depois da guerra, seu som sobreviveu, mas a intensidade compositional caiu muito até o final da década, Ellington perdeu muito das suas distintas vozes.

O período moderno, ou a Era de Newport começa em 1951 quando Sonny Greer foi substituído por Louis Bellson e a banda ganhou uma nova agilidade rítmica. Bellson ficou durante aproximadamente três anos, no final sendo substituído por Sam Woodyard.

Mas a flutuação rítmica da banda sempre era fixa com um rasto moderno e melhorias sutis inspiradas em sua musicabilidade. Quando Johnny Hodges voltou depois de uma ausência de cinco anos, Ellington sentiu-se revigorado e pronto para seguir adiante.

O desempenho histórico de "Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue" no Newport Jazz Festival de 1956 abriu uma era nova de prosperidade para Ellington que reavivou a composição e produziu uma sucessão de trabalhos estimulantes, de "Such Sweet Thunder" (1957) para "The Far East Suite" (1966).

Durante os anos finais da banda, início de 60 até 1974, a morte cortou fora o que tinha parecia ser imutável. Duke Ellington morreu de câncer no dia 24 de maio de 1974, mas a banda continuou de forma irregular, sob a direção de seu filho Mercer Ellington.

Pink Anderson & Floyd Council

O BLUES DE PINK FLOYD

Ao entrarem no escritório para assinarem o primeiro contrato, um dos executivos com um charuto na boca foi logo perguntando, "Qual de vocês é o Pink?" Mesmo depois de explicado que Pink Floyd se trata apenas do nome da banda, esta pergunta ocasionalmente voltava a ser feita.

Mal sabiam alguns que existia um Pink como também um Floyd, apenas não eram da banda. Desde então, Syd Barrett já contou até que o nome foi telepaticamente transmitido para ele por um OVNI que passava certo dia.

Porém a versão mais aceita durante os primeiros anos da banda e largamente divulgado era de que se tratava do nome de um disco. O disco chamava-se "The Pink Floyd Sound", o nome da banda sendo rapidamente abreviado para apenas Pink Floyd.

Este disco, conta a versão, foi gravado pela dupla obscura de blues Pink Anderson e Floyd ‘Dipper Boy’ Council.

PINK ANDERSON

Seu nome verdadeiro é Pinkney Anderson, nascido na cidade de Lawrence, Carolina do Sul, no dia 12 de fevereiro de 1900. Sua família se mudou para Greenville e depois Spartanburg, onde ele cresceu e viveu por boa parte de sua vida. Menino ativo e desinibido, para conseguir trocados cantava e dançava nas ruas. Um vizinho lhe ensinou os princípios de como tocar o violão, porem ele so iria se desenvolver no instrumento a partir de 1916 quando conheceu Simmie Dooley. Talentoso instrumentista e cantor, Simmie tinha dificuldades para conseguir trabalho pelo fato de ser cego. Os dois se tornaram grandes amigos.

Anderson conseguiu trabalho como dançarino e comediante no que se costuma chamar de show medicinal, ou seja, um pequeno show andarilho que atrai um pequeno publico o tempo suficiente para vender remédios ‘alternativos’, geralmente um tônico de ervas não identificadas garantidos a resolver um sem número de males. Pink Anderson se juntou ao Dr. Kerr’s Indian Remedy Company Medicine Show onde ele permaneceria pelos próximos trinta anos.

Quando não estava viajando com o Dr. Kerr, Pink Anderson e Simmie Dooley iam até a mata com violão e garrafão de whiskey caseiro e treinavam até altas horas. A exigência de Dooley que chegava a bater em Pink com uma vareta quando este insistia em errar certos acordes, somados à aplicação séria do rapaz, fez com que no espaço de pouco mais de um ano, Pink Anderson se tornasse um instrumentista bastante desenvolto. Tanto que ele passou a atrair o povo para assistir o show do Dr. Kerr, não mais contando piadas mas utilizando seu violão. As exigências deste tipo de trabalho obrigam o musico a ser extremamente eclético como também ser meio ‘repentista’, compondo letras na hora com nomes e descrições das pessoas que o assistiam naquele momento.

A dupla Simmie e Pink, tocando sempre em festas, piqueniques, ou mesmo nas ruas de Spartanburg, passa a ganhar certo reconhecimento. Durante a década de vinte, Anderson também tocou com uma variedade de músicos de rua, entre estes, ‘Fiddlin’ Frank Martin e seu filho Carl Martin. Em 1928, após um set da dupla Simmie e Pink, surgiu um convite para gravarem em Atlanta pelo selo Columbia. Foram quatro faixas que renderam dois compactos lançados no espaço de dois anos. O primeiro compacto vendeu tão bem que tiveram de imprimir uma segunda prensagem. A Columbia convida Anderson de volta, porém sem Dooley. Amigo fiel, o convite foi prontamente recusado por Anderson, que logo volta a sua rotina de viagens com o show medicinal.

Dr. Kerr se aposentou em 1945, Anderson logo se atrelando a outros shows medicinais. Sua fama de bom musico e bom cantor o manteve no circuito dos shows medicinais, entre os quais estão o Frank Curry Show, o Emmer Smith Show, o WA Blair Show e finalmente o Big Chief Thundercould's Show, este se aposentou em 1950. Durante sua passagem pelo Emmer Smith Show, fez amizade com o ainda jovem Peg Leg Sam (Arthur Jackson), a quem ensinou muito sobre musica.

Com o país rapidamente mudando após a Segunda Guerra, em parte graças ao surgimento da televisão, este tipo de show estava rapidamente se tornando extinto. Se apresentando em Charlottesville na Virginia, Pink Anderson acabou sendo gravado pela segunda vez em sua longa carreira. O material compreende em parte, canções típicas utilizados nos shows medicinais, estilo cada vez mais raro e que ele dominava tão bem. Pink acabou dividindo essas sessões com outro bluesman, o Reverendo Gary Davis. Anderson em 1954 volta para Spartanburg tocando com Charles ‘Baby’ Tate alem de montar um trio com Keg Shorty Bell na gaita e Chilly Willy Williams no esfregão de roupa.

Sua carreira sofreu uma travada em 1957 após Anderson sofrer um ataque cardíaco, parando definitivamente de viajar e se fixando em Spartanburg. Quatro anos depois, em 1961, seu grande amigo Simmie Dooley faleceu. No ano seguinte, após uma apresentação ao lado de Baby Tate, Anderson receberia um convite de Sam Charters, dono do selo Charters, para gravar uma série de discos.

É a partir da década de sessenta que foram gravados o grosso de sua discografia. Assim como existe a região do Delta no Mississippi, existe na Carolina a região de Piedmont, na qual o estilo é caracterizado por um blues melancólico na voz. Neste sentido, Pink Anderson é um belo exemplo e lembra muito outro filho da região, o bem mais famoso Blind Boy Fuller. Ao todo foram três LP’s, respectivamente um de blues, um de baladas e outra de canções típicas de shows medicinais. Anderson a esta altura de sua vida, aos sessenta e um anos de idade, já passara de seu auge, no entanto, ainda demonstrava grande firmeza tanto em sua palhetada quanto em sua voz. No ano seguinte, Pink Anderson ainda apareceu no filme "The Bluesman". O filme lhe permitiu cobrar um pouco mais por suas apresentações porem em 1964 ele sofreu seu segundo ataque cardíaco o que o obrigou a parar de vez com a vida artística.

Passou o resto de sua vida morando em um barraco e ensinando seu filho, hoje conhecido como Little Pink, a tocar o violão. Ganhava $75 de aposentadoria e pagava $50 de aluguel. O resto do seu orçamento vinha de jogos de cartas que ele promovia em casa e venda de whiskey de alambique caseiro (moonshine whiskey). Em total obscuridade, sem nem seus vizinhos saberem que ele era músico ou que seu nome era associada à já famosa banda inglesa, Pink Anderson morreu dia 12 de outubro de 1974.

FLOYD COUNCIL

Natural de Chapel Hill, Carolina do Norte, Floyd ‘Dipper Boy’ Council nasceu no dia 2 de setembro de 1911. Passou a década de vinte cantando nas ruas com os irmãos Leo e Thomas Strowd, este ultimo sendo sua primeira grande influencia musical. Somente aos 35 anos, em 1935, foi que Floyd acabou sendo descoberto por John Baxter Long da ACR Records, ainda cantando nas ruas de Chapel Hill. Levado para Nova York, Floyd gravou segundo violão nos discos de Blind Boy Fuller. Council gravou algumas faixas de material próprio e em dezembro de 1937, gravou faixas com Sonny Terry.

Durante as décadas de quarenta e cinqüenta Council voltou a tocar com Thomas Strowd em Chapel Hill. Lembrado por muitos como um exímio violonista, pouco se conhece realmente do seu acervo musical. Em 1969, Floyd em uma entrevista disse que havia gravado ao todo vinte e sete títulos. Todavia, até o momento, foram identificados apenas dezoito. Seis de trabalhos solos, sete tocando para Blind Boy Fuller, duas com Sonny Terry e outras três que ele gravou em agosto de 1970, antes de se aposentar definitivamente graças a problemas de saúde que afetaram seu controle motor, deixando os músculos de sua garganta paralisados.

Floyd Council se mudou para a cidade de Sanford na Carolina do Norte onde morreu em junho de 1976.

Como puderam perceber, embora os dois músicos sejam da mesma parte da America, dos estados da Carolina, não há evidência alguma de que Pink e Floyd sequer se conheciam, quanto mais teriam gravado como uma dupla. Não existe nenhum disco chamado "The Pink Floyd Sound", e hoje se sabe que a união das forcas destes dois artistas obscuros ficou por conta apenas da mente criativa de Syd Barrett. O livro "Shine On Your Crazy Diamond", biografia sobre Syd Barrett, conta que Syd havia viajado para Cambridge à procura de um vocalista para sua banda.

Não encontrou o cantor mas acabou comprando dois discos, e na viagem de trem de volta, possivelmente enquanto namorava a capa, pensou na hipóteses de juntar o nome destes dois artistas, Pink Anderson e Floyd Council. O nome soava certo. Tornou-se uma homenagem que salvou estes dois excelentes músicos (segundo todos que ouviram ou tocaram tanto com Pink quanto com Floyd) de uma total obscuridade.
